PackScan FAQ

Quick answers about PackScan, the scan-to-pack station for Shopify. Can’t find what you need? Email support@packscan.shop.

Getting started

Who is PackScan for?

Shopify merchants who pack and ship their own orders from a packing station, warehouse, or back room and want to verify every item before the label prints. Case-pack scanning also makes it a good fit for wholesale shippers.

Do I need to install anything?

Install PackScan from the Shopify App Store for the store you pack for, then open it in a browser on your packing computer. If you print to a Zebra printer, also install Zebra Browser Print on that computer.

Can I try PackScan before installing it?

Yes. The live demo opens in Demo mode with sample orders and a FedEx sandbox test account, so no real labels, charges, or Shopify changes are made.

Does the demo use my carrier account?

No. The live demo, Demo mode, and the FedEx sandbox switch in Settings use a built-in FedEx test account, so no real labels are created and nothing is charged to your carrier account.

What does a typical pack look like?

Scan the order (or pick it from the open orders list), scan each unit, choose a saved box, compare rates, and print the label and packing slip. PackScan then marks the order fulfilled in Shopify with the tracking number.

Scanning

What barcode scanners work with PackScan?

Any USB or Bluetooth barcode scanner that types the scanned code like a keyboard and presses Enter. On a phone or tablet, you can tap Scan With Camera to scan with the back camera instead.

What happens if the wrong item is scanned?

PackScan shows a “Not on this order” alert. Press OK or any key to continue, then scan the correct item. An optional scan beep can be turned on in Settings.

Can one scan count a whole case?

Yes. Pack sizes EA, C1, C2, and C3 let one scan add a set number of units, so case packs count correctly. Carton Auto-fill can print a carton's label and close it when it reaches the number of units you choose.

Some open orders are missing from the list. Why?

PackScan loads a set number of open orders. Raise Orders to load in Settings (up to 500) and refresh.

Carriers and labels

Which carriers does PackScan support?

FedEx, UPS, and USPS through Stamps.com. You connect your own carrier accounts in PackScan Settings, so you see your own rates and your carrier bills postage to your account.

Do I need my own carrier accounts?

Yes. Labels are created on your own FedEx, UPS, or Stamps.com account, and your carrier bills postage to that account. PackScan does not sell postage. The setup guide walks through getting your API keys.

Do I need FedEx label certification?

Yes, before you print live FedEx labels with your own account. FedEx certifies sample labels made under your own FedEx project, and PackScan's FedEx sandbox switch uses a built-in demo test account for trying the app, so it can't produce those samples. Email support@packscan.shop to coordinate certification before you go live, and we'll walk you through it.

Does PackScan buy Shopify Shipping labels?

No. PackScan creates labels through your own FedEx, UPS, and Stamps.com accounts, then writes the fulfillment and tracking number back to the Shopify order.

Do I have to enter my carrier keys on every computer?

Yes. Carrier keys and passwords are saved in the browser on each packing station, not shared between computers. Enter them on each station you pack from, and don't save them on shared or public computers.

Can I void a label?

Yes. Open Label History, which shows labels from the last 24 hours, and void the label there.

Printing

What printers does PackScan support?

Zebra thermal printers print 4×6 labels and packing slips through Zebra Browser Print. Any other 4×6 label printer works through the browser print dialog with Fit to page turned off and the scale set to 100%.

Discover shows “Failed to fetch” when I look for my Zebra printer.

Make sure Zebra Browser Print is running on the packing computer. In Chrome, click the padlock next to the address, open Site settings, allow Local network access (or Apps on your local network), then reload PackScan.

My labels print too small or cut off.

In the browser print dialog, choose your 4×6 printer, turn off Fit to page, and print at 100% scale. If you use a Zebra printer, print through Zebra Browser Print instead.
